Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)
CBT-I is an evidence-based, effective, non-pharmacological treatment of insomnia that has been used around the world and is considered by sleep experts to be the standard of care for the psychological treatment of insomnia. CBT-I is a holistic approach that includes interventions aimed at changing the thought and behavioral habits that create barriers to good sleep. It effectively addresses the multiple ways insomnia can impact individuals.
Sleep Hygiene
This includes a variety of recommendations all designed to make the sleep environment and behavior leading up to bedtime more conducive to good sleep. These include darkening the room, use of masking sounds (white noise or other sound machines), reducing or eliminating caffeinated beverages, etc. Research has shown, however, that sleep hygiene alone is unlikely to bring about much relief for sufferers of chronic insomnia.
Treatment of anxiety related to sleep problems
Anxiety is a common co-occurring problem for insomnia sufferers. When anxiety is determined to be part of the problem, we provide effective, evidence-based intervention to help individuals more effectively manage those anxiety symptoms.
CPAP Desensitization
When, despite all efforts, one is unable to tolerate their CPAP equipment (mask, headgear, air flow), CPAP desensitization can be utilized to help improve adherence so that the full benefit of CPAP for obstructive sleep apnea can be experienced. Many patients experience improvement in CPAP tolerance after only a few sessions.
Relaxation Training
Many insomnia sufferers struggle with settling down physically and mentally at bedtime, or they may wake up and be unable to return to sleep for long periods of time, if at all, due to physical tension or the mind becoming activated. Along with the CBT-I strategies discussed above, we offer training in several effective techniques to relax the body and calm the mind to help you drift into deeper and more satisfying sleep.
