About Dr. Wyma

Dr. John Wyma is a Nevada Licensed Psychologist (License #PY-0841), is a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology in Clinical Psychology, and is certified in Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I).

He received his doctorate from the American Psychological Association-accredited California School of Professional Psychology (now Alliant International University) in San Diego in 1987 and was first licensed for independent practice in Arizona in 1988.

After serving in a community mental health center in Prescott, Arizona for 6 years, Dr. Wyma went into private practice in 1992, establishing Cornerstone Family Counseling Center.

He invested the next 20 years providing psychological services to individuals, couples, and families, focusing on trauma recovery, treatment of depression and anxiety, and providing pre-employment and fitness-for-duty evaluations for local EMS and fire services and law enforcement agencies.

Feeling a strong calling to help America’s military veterans, Dr. Wyma closed his private practice in 2013 to join the Veterans Health Administration at the Fayetteville, Arkansas VA Medical Center before moving to the Reno VA Medical Center in 2016, where his duties included directing the accredited Psychology Internship training program for several years.

Throughout his years in private practice, but particularly through his work with the veteran population, Dr. Wyma’s appreciation for the widespread problem of insomnia and its impact on physical and mental well-being became a primary professional interest.

He then obtained further training and was certified by the VA in the treatment of insomnia through Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I).

Helping clients get better sleep through the application of evidence-based treatments has become the focus of his work, and he finds immense pleasure in providing treatment that has such a big impact on so many aspects of clients’ well-being.

Dr. Wyma is a member of the Society for Behavioral Sleep Medicine and the Nevada Psychological Association.

His personal interests include serving and supporting his family, spiritual growth and development, flyfishing, hiking, camping, amateur astronomy, reading (mainly Westerns, detective thrillers, and books on spiritual formation), and the lifelong challenge of mastering the art of barbequing and smoking meats and using his outdoor pizza oven.
